Last week, we had an architectural photography trip to METU with Emrah Köşgeroğlu. We were responsible for observation for different hinges on really richly detailed buildings of METU. For the first time, by this assignment, we had an aim while taking photographs, and conceptual issues of preparing an essay. Here is mine, on textural and material based connections between surfaces; PLANAR HINGES.

While having the trip in Istanbul, we also went to the construction area and field office of the Halic Metro Crossing Bridge. In field office, we have been informed about the progress, and the main structure/methods. It was a big honour to be there and listen the project from one of it’s architects Ali Ulvi ALTAN who is also in Istanbul Herritage Commitee. And also, having that much information about “constructing a bridge” is really interesting and helpful for me. By the way, all trip long we were with Istanbul Technical University students and an instructor who provided important opportunities for these special meetings and visits.
Also, while were having this meeting i realized that we had 2 guests too, who were there for the protection of old history of Istanbul. That two guys were there for the architectural solutions on “protecting the historical context”. This was also an important point which were clearly representing the given importance on historical context of Istanbul.
*Meeting with Mr. Altan
Last week, on March 23-24-25th, we had an architectural trip to Istanbul (we were together with Middle East Technical University while they were making their ground truth) and while having the trip, we were also responsible for an observation which is named: “OLD & NEW”. Here, is a short expression of what i want to point.
As we all know, in today’s world there are many buildings being constructed because of need in living areas. And also we have restorations on old constructs & buildings. Till now, everything looks reasonable, because the general situation is progressing as: “people need, they construct.” But there’s a strong point which cannot be missed while talking about these issues. Even you work in a manner which is for need, you have a CONTEXT which CANNOT be discarded. As architects, we all have this strong responsibility to the texture of that context; topography, historical context, social context, silhouette: physical context. If we get to the point: while constructing, an architect mustn’t dismiss the context he is constructing in, or he can’t dismiss the architectural texture he is restorating in.
In Istanbul, besides we have many archetypal examples of constructing in reference to the both historical and physical context, we have many examples which are completely irrelevant to the physical and historical texture.
Here I have an example which is completely discordant to the building which is placed “next and under?” to it. When i begin to observe this building, i feel like i am not sure even this building is designed by an architect or not. When you make a building which will be constructed in this kind of a context, you can’t act as you were building a construct in center of the city between all glasses metals and steels.
And i have a question in my mind, to the designer of this building; just the financial problems made him not to care, or the owner was drunk? I dont know. Here is the image.
As we have these kind of examples which are not related with their context even while restorate, we have the others which are completely right examples of saving the context while constructing new, in old.
This picture is taken after had the meeting with Mr. ALTAN, in construction side of Halic Metro Crossing Bridge. The context is clearly protected by directly the architects of the bridge, and to have all the progress they had 2 guests who are experrt architects of restoration.
Also while this protection project were progressing, the bridge construct was leading forward, too. And because of this situation, they had some problems about constructing the bridge. The main problem was about the sockets which were designed to make the jambs fixed into the rocks to make the structure steady. But because of the history lying under the layer they were constructing on, because they wanted to protect the ancient walls and old caiques, they changed the placement of jambs everytime which effected the project directly and hardly. But as a conclusion, they managed to protect them all, and now 32 caiques & a part of the continuous ancient wall. Here is the picture from the construct.
